Communication in Toastmasters

Subete ni oite yoi hi. Minasan kyō wa dōdesu ka?
Now if I say this to you will you understand what am I trying to say?

Of course not. Now let me end this suspense. What I’ve written is in the Japanese language – it means
“Good day to all. How are you all doing today”?
Communication is an integral part of our lives. To make a point that others understand us and to understand others we need to speak a common language. Communication applies to the exchange of ideas and thoughts between two or more individuals. It can be done through writing, speech, gestures, symbols, or written communication. Communication is the continuous transmission of a message among two or more individuals the sender and receiver.

Wherever we are in the world we cannot manage without communication. Imagine a life without any sort of communication. Will we be able to survive without it? Our answer will be no. In our personal and professional lives communication is very important. Can we imagine any household without any sort of interaction? Can we think of any business where there is no sort of communication? Can we manage any of our tasks without any means of communication? Our answer to all these questions will be a simple NO.

For most of my life, I kept thinking that I was not a good communicator. I felt very shy to approach anyone for anything. I never had any self-confidence. But when I was introduced to Toastmasters I realized I was wrong all this time. I had all the skills within me but I never had the correct platform to exhibit them. Here at Toastmasters I not only learned to communicate effectively but my presentation skills also improved. My lost confidence was retrieved. When I started writing my speeches and then presented them, they always touched the hearts of the audience. I then realized how powerful words can be. But just writing powerful words won’t be enough for a good award-winning speech, the gestures which are accompanied by our words presented are essential too. So what are all these? These are all part of the communication process of our lives. In my 4 years journey in Toastmasters, I have won many allocates of best speakers in International and humorous categories at the Division and the DTAC level. I achieved this success only after understanding the importance of correct communication. And without Toastmasters I wouldn’t have found it.

Never think too low about yourself, and never demoralize yourself. Always try to find that hidden talent within you. Let out your emotions through any form of communication you are comfortable with. Always remember the only place without any communication is a graveyard, and until you are alive make the best use of your time, your effort and explore yourself into the vast world of communication. I have rediscovered my true self, have you?
